Mums in Arts & Crafts
by Marian Fox, Chesapeake Chrysanthemum Society

Now is the time to plan for an entry in the Arts & Crafts Division of the 2002 NCS show. The Arts & Crafts Division is for those of us who recognize the merits and perfection of our favorite flower, but (1) do not like to get dirt under our fingernails, (2) no longer have a place to grow them, (3) still have space for a mum bed but have uncooperative knees, or (4) are growers with talents that expand beyond soil, fertilizer, and pinching.

If your crafting skills are a little rusty, enroll in an upcoming class or two. Encourage a talented friend, relative or spouse to get "chrysanthemum creative." If you are an arranger, invite sketchers and painters to build from your talents. A decoupage artist can use his/her stash of King’s catalogues.

Ten years ago (in the June 1991 issue of The Chrysanthemum) we published a list of arts and crafts from A to Z to inspire folks to exercise some known or hidden talents. We never did find a craft starting with X or Z. However, some letters suggested many crafts, e.g. silversmithing, smocking, soft sculpture, stenciling. That list contained the following:

    1. Acrylics, Airbrush, Applique
    2. Bergello, Batik, Beading, Braiding
    3. Ceramics, China painting, Collage, Crewel work, Crochet, Cutwork
    4. Decoupage
    5. Enameling, Engraving, Etching
    6. Filet crochet, Florentine embroidery
    7. Goldsmithing, Gouache, Grosspointe
    8. Hooking, Huckwork
    9. Ink sketching, Inlay
    10. Japanning, Jewel setting
    11. Knotting, Knotting
    12. Lost wax casting
    13. Marquetery, Mosaics
    14. Needle lace, Needlepoint, Niello
    15. Oils, Openwork, Origami
    16. Pastels, Patchwork, Petitpoint, Photographs
    17. Quilling, Quilting
    18. Reverse applique, Rya
    19. Silversmithing, Silkscreen, Smocking, Soft sculpture, Stenciling
    20. Tatting, Tempera, Tole painting, Trapunto
    21. Underglazing
    22. Vase throwing
    23. Watercolors, Wax resist, Weaving, Woodcuts
    24. ??? (Xeroxing is not a recognized art form.)
    25. Yarn work
    26. ???

Entrants in this division do not have to be members of a chrysanthemum society; they just have to make something and enter.

Plan now. Be ready to be creative on those winter days. Then you’ll be ready for this division for Mums 2002.
