THE 57TH ANNUAL SHOW OF THE
NATIONAL CHRYSANTHEMUM SOCIETY

Hosted by the Chrysanthemum Society of Marin

The 57th Annual Show, hosted by the Chrysanthemum Society of Marin, took place from October 24 to 29, at the Flamingo Resort Hotel and Conference Center in the city of Santa Rosa in the heart of Sonoma County, California. Santa Rosa is famous for being the home of Luther Burbank, a giant in the world of gardening. The hotel registered a total of 122 NCSA members and guests.

Convention activities were available every day. Workshops provided an educational theme. They included: Jesse Terres' presentation on "Blue Ribbon Sprays," Peter Guasco on "Growing Thousands of Mums"; and a special treat with Bob Hornbeck's talk on Luther Burbank's Legacy". On one evening Ted King gave a slide program on "New Introductions".

Persistent rain failed to dampen the spirits of participants in our four tours, organized and led by Leonard Rogers. They started with a visit on Wednesday, October 25th to Ted King's Nursery in Clements. On the 26th, the "California Botanicals" tour included Muir Woods, a Superb Chinese dim sum lunch in Sausalito and a docent tour of Strybing Arboretum and Botanical Gardens in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. Saturday's tour of the Sonoma Plaza area introduced guests to California history, including the Sonoma Mission, General Vallejo's home and barracks and California's oldest winery, Buena Vista. The final tour on Sunday took a tram tour over hill and dale of the Benzinger Family Winery, Peter Guasco's Gardens and a stop at Luther Burbank's home and gardens.

Of course there were the Board of Directors Meeting, Master Exam, and Judges Symposium going on during the entire week as well.

The Horticultural exhibits were beautifully presented in the hotel ballroom and included 221 entries from 30 exhibitors. The Design Division had 52 entries from 19 exhibitors, the Basket Division with 7 entries from 6 exhibitors. Peter Guasco's spectacular array of chrysanthemum blooms filled a separate room.

The Saturday reception and dinner was attended by 111 NCS members and guests who were entertained by a violinist. Following dinner the NCS Awards were presented by Jo Harberson NCS President and J.W. Lambert the Awards Chairman. The program began with Jo Harberson announcing that by resolution adopted by the NCS Board of Directors, The NCS International Award will be known as the "Joseph and Elizabeth Millett NCS International Award," which this year was given to Peter Guasco. A very surprised Peter was also presented " The Japanese All Japan Chrysanthemum Federation's Gold Medal" for his outstanding efforts in perpetuating the art of growing Fukusuke in the United States.

As Show Chairman and President of the Chrysanthemum Society of Marin, I wish to thank Bob Kaufman for the tremendous effort put forth in organizing this show. I would like to acknowledge Georgia Bartl for her wonderful handmade quilt that she offered for the raffle and was won by Dorthy Gray of Flemington, New Jersey. Many thanks to Len Rogers and Lou Hicks for a job well done, Ruth Ann Waite for sharing with us the knowledge she gained from last year's show; however, a show isn't run by just a few people. It took the entire Marin Club, financial help from the Northern California Chapter, NCS members Jim and Martha Hackett that handled Classification and Placement along with Phil and Karen Rice that took on Tabulating, National Officers, the clerks, the judges, Luther Burbank District Garden Clubs, spouses and family members, and others too numerous to mention. Thank you all for a wonderful job.

Joelle Holford, Flower Show Chairman
